Many students are
interested in a career
in veterinary nursing and
we are often asked how
they can achieve this aim.
There are two ways to train
to become a Veterinary Nurse:-
1) Secure a trainee nurse
position at an approved
veterinary practice and
attend college on
a day/block release basis
to complete the Royal
College of Veterinary
Surgeons (RCVS)
course or
2) Achieve a high grade
in the BTEC National
Diploma in Animal
Management or a
programme of A-levels
and go onto a Veterinary
Nursing Degree programme.

Degree Level Courses:

Reaseheath’s animal centre is dedicated to education, training, conservation and the welfare of domestic and exotic species.

We have a countrywide reputation for the excellence of our animal management courses and they are one of the most popular subjects we offer.

Over 500 students study at our centre each year, attending full-time and part-time Higher Education courses, short evening sessions, specialist skills workshops and courses aimed at professionals.

Reaseheath staff are experienced in a wide range of fields, including zoo, aquaria, behaviour, conservation, dog training, animal nursing and business.

We were the first college in the country to be granted a zoo licence - evidence of our high standard of animal welfare and commitment to education and research. We are a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA).

Our animal centre has undergone a £3.5 million upgrade and houses 125 species of animals including:

Mammals: serval cat, tapir, ring tailed lemurs, porcupines, tamarin monkeys, otters, capybara, meerkats, mara and wallabies among others.

Birds: birds of prey, chickens, ducks, peacocks, finches, cockatiels, cockatoos and budgies.

Reptiles: snakes, bearded dragons, tortoises and turtles.

Fish: a range of freshwater and marine fish.

Invertebrates: tarantulas, scorpions and insects.

Amphibians: frogs, toads and newts.

We have excellent links with Chester Zoo, the RSPCA, Pet Care Trust, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and other animal related industries.

The combination of theory and practical teaching that students receive gives them the opportunity to develop an excellent understanding of the animal world and industry. Your studies will include species specific information, biology, anatomy and physiology, behaviour and current welfare issues.

We also offer short and part-time courses. Please see the prospectus for details.
