Full House at Reaseheath’s Lambing Event

Families flocked in their hundreds to Reaseheath College over the weekend to meet the first lambs of the season.

Record numbers of visitors watched lambs being born and cared for, and children were able to cuddle some of the new arrivals. A big screen showed video clips of earlier action and experts were on hand to demonstrate the special care required for a few of the lambs, such as bottle feeding and fostering.

Other stars of the popular event, which will be repeated next weekend, included a collection of creatures from the Nantwich college’s animal centre. Litters of piglets, a display of tractors, a children’s quiz and a garden plant sale were other attractions.

Reaseheath’s agricultural students have been working around the clock in the lambing sheds to make sure the lambs and ewes get the best care. The college has 500 sheep ready to give birth in the next six weeks and about 800 lambs are expected. The lambing events have been running for the past 20 years and are becoming more popular each year.

Said Steve Roach, Section Manager for Agriculture: “These lambing events give us a fantastic opportunity to show off the type of work we do here at college and the outstanding calibre of our students.  We’ve tried to offer lots of learning opportunities for all ages and, judging from the enthusiasm of our visitors, we’ve succeeded. As a leading landbased college, we feel very strongly that the general public needs to have a greater understanding of how the countryside operates. We’d like to think that this event helps towards that goal.”

Tammi Sinden, whose two year old son Rowan had just been introduced to a ferret, said:”This has been a great day out. There’s been so much to see and do. I might even come back next week!”

Reaseheath College’s lambing sheds will open to the public again on Saturday and Sunday March 7th and 8th from 10am to 5pm. Hot refreshments are  available and indoor and outdoor plants are  for sale.
