Level 3 Certificate in Canine Training and Behaviour

This qualification is accredited through Open College Network West Midlands and regulated through Ofqual. The course is accredited at Level 3 at 24 credits (240 hours). This is a very intense practical course offered over two weeks (accommodation is available). You will also be required to complete theoretical work before / after the course to meet the full assessment criteria.

You will have access to the specialised canine facilities at Reaseheath College including kennelling for 30 dogs, exercise and training arena and two industry standard grooming parlours. Canine specialised staff delivering on the course have MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Kennel Club Accredited Instructor in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour, 7 years experience working as a Military Dog Handler, Trainer and Instructor, Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Course Content:

The course consists of 4 modules:

Dog Training Theory (basic principles of dog training and equipment, learning theories  – classical conditioning and operant conditioning, training methods, applied dog training)

Canine Behaviour and Communication (origins of the dog, wolf/wild dog behaviour and its implications and limitations, dog behaviour, dog communication, dog emotion)

Practical Dog Training (range of methods and techniques to train dogs,  evaluate training methods used, employ appropriate training methods, demonstrate positive methods, different techniques of teaching the same exercise)

Instructing Dog Training (learning styles and adaptin training sessions to meet individual needs, plan safe and effective group training sessions, deliver safe and effective group training sessions, deliver a short lecture, evaluate sessions)

You will also have the opportunity to take the Award in Education and Training (nationally recognised initial teacher training qualification)


Assessment will cover a range of methods including short report writing, practical demonstrations and short answer questions.

Entry Requirements

No specific entry requirements but candidates must be over 18 years old, working at level 2 and have an interest and some experience and confidence with training dogs.
