This practical two day course leads to the British Wool Marketing Board Blue/Bronze Seal shearing award (depending on ability)

The shearing course is aimed at everyone, from the complete novice to the competition/contract shearer and covers every aspect of the shearing process from setting up the equipment and pens to packing and presenting the fleece for sale. Experienced instructors from the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) will give hands-on tuition and everyone has the opportunity to earn a ‘Seal’ – a method of recognition ranging from blue to gold, depending on personal ability.

  • Health and safety
  • Preparation
  • Pen layout
  • Hanging motor
  • Setting hand piece
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Sharpening combs and cutters
  • Handling and positioning of sheep
  • Shearing techniques
  • Common shearing faults
  • Rolling fleece and packing wool.Learning to shear sheep properly is a valuable and potentially profitable traditional skill. Reaseheath College in conjunction with the British Wool Marketing Board will be running this course.
