Technical Baccalaureate in

Agriculture

The Technical Baccalaureate is a government backed programme that is designed for talented individuals who wish to pursue a career within the field of agriculture.

Designed for talented individuals with a passion for the agricultural industry, the TechBacc enables you to study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture alongside a Level 3 Maths qualification and extended industry project. You will also complete an industry relevant work placement.

This course provides an excellent foundation for progression onto specialist courses at university as well as offering a direct pathway into employment within the agricultural industry.

How long will it take?

  • 2 years full time or 3 years (including a sandwich year placement in year 2)

What qualifications do I need to start?

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English, Maths and Science at grade B, or
  • Relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above with GCSE grade B in Maths and English

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Level 3 Extended Project qualification

Successful completion of these 3 elements will result in the awarding of the Technical Baccalaureate performance measure

Year 1 modules

What will I study?

  • Understand livestock production
  • Crop production

  • Animal anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding machinery operations
  • Undertaking pig production
  • Understand the principles of plant and soil science

  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Year 2 modules

What will I study?

  • Sandwich year placement (full 12 months)

This is optional, as this course can be completed over a 2 year period.

Year 3 modules

What will I study?

For year 3 of the programme, there is an option to specialise in Dairy Herd management, Beef and Sheep management or arable crop management.

Modules include:

  • Business planning
  • Forage crop management
  • Understand the use of spreaders and sprayers
  • Understand and promote animal health
  • Undertake dairy production
  • Undertake beef production
  • Undertake sheep production
  • Understanding root crop and field vegetable production
  • Grassland management
  • Investigative project
  • Understanding livestock breeding and nutrition
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Industry mentor

Depending on the route chosen – all students complete an industry based placement and will be assigned an ‘Industry Mentor’ who will provide support and guidance during your course programme.

This will help you to develop the knowledge, experience and skills that will best prepare you for a career in the agriculture industry.

If a sandwich year placement is undertaken (year 2 of the programme) this is for 12 months.

How much will this course cost?

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2017 the tuition fees and exam costs are free for our courses. If you are aged 19 or over you may have to pay a fee.

You may also be required to pay costs associated with study tours or additional qualifications.

Transport

Accommodation

At Reaseheath we have on-site residential accommodation for 785 students. If you are aged over 16 and studying on a full-time course you may apply for a residential place. Visit the accommodation pages on our website for more information.
