What skills do I need?

You don’t need any formal skills but a keen interest in the food industry is essential! Your GCSE results will determine which level course you come and study. For entry requirements take a look at each course page.

What are my job/career options after this course?

Depending on what course you study career options vary from food technologist, restaurant/hotel chef, bakery technologist, patisserie chef, butcher, food nutritionist and much more.

Where will I study, what are the facilities like?

Our food department offers world class, industry standard food halls – regarded as the best of any college in Europe.

The modern 2,500 square foot food centre incorporates commercial processing equipment and is segregated into 3 distinct areas: meat, bakery, dairy as well as onsite laboratories for scientific testing, and new product development facilities covering all aspects of food manufacture.

Will my course cost anything?

Students aged under 19 will not be charged tuition fees. If you are aged over 19 visit the 19+ Further Education Tuition Fees page.

Will I go on any trips or study tours?

There will be several visits for food students throughout the course, some of which may charge an entrance fee.

A study tour is planned in for the Food Technology Level 3 Year 2 students, cost to be decided once students pick their destination in conjunction with the course managers.

What equipment will I need?

Students on a bakery and patisserie course will need two chef whites, one pair of chef trousers, two skull caps and one knife bag with pastry knifes and other various pastry equipment (this can be purchased through the college for approximately £115).

Students on a food technology course will need a white coat and white wellingtons (these can be purchased through the college for approximately £35).

All students will also be required to purchase stationery and reference textbooks.

Laundry costs for PPE 2014/2015 will be:

Food Technology Level 3 Yr’s 1 & 2 – £50.00 / year

Bakery Level 2 & 3 – £65.00 / year

 

Is work experience part of my course?

All students will undertake work experience, 4 week block will be undertaken either in March or May.

Will I be doing stock duties?

The only time Food students are required to attend outside college hours is at our annual Family Festival in May.
