Dog Grooming – OCN Level 3 Certificate

Reaseheath Dog Grooming Programme is a twelve week practical course, leading to a Level 3 OCN certificate. You will need to attend the college one evening/day a week and will experience working in our professional standard grooming parlour. During this 12 week course you will need to provide yourself with a variety of dog breeds of various coat types, the use of these dogs will help develop your handling, grooming, bathing and clipping skills.

These courses are suitable for people wanting to groom their own dogs or as an introductory course for people wanting to start work as a groomer. If you are wanting to groom professionally, then you should look at the City and Guilds Dog Grooming Qualifications.

Entry requirements

Course content

During this course you will build a portfolio demonstrating the ability in grooming and clipping you have developed during the course. Health and Safety and systems of working in a commercial grooming parlour will be integral throughout the course. The learning outcomes cover:

  • Correct handling and restraint of a range of dogs with different temperaments
  • Safe bathing and drying dogs
  • Correct grooming practices across a range of breeds of dogs, coat types and identifying correct equipment for each
  • Correct styling and clipping of a range of breed of dogs

Assessment is through practical observation of at least 8 dogs backed up with oral questions and a written portfolio.

What you need to bring

Candidates will need to have access to a range of different breeds of dogs (minimum 8) which they can ‘borrow’ to gain sufficient experience of different coat types, styling, clipping, etc.

A file and notepaper will be needed to take notes and start production of your portfolio.

A camera/phone will be beneficial to enable you to take before and after photos.

All other equipment and products will be provided.
