Open College Network West Midlands – Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming
30 days – £3,600
The OCN Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming was launched in January 2017 by The Open College Network West Midlands. This new qualification was introduced to be an alternative route from the City & Guilds. The OCN qualification is the same level as the full Level 3 Diploma by City & Guilds. Both the City & Guilds Diploma and the new OCN Diploma are regulated by Ofqual and are the only two qualifications on the National Educational Framework.
The course is held one day a week over a thirty week period and within this time frame you will groom at least 10 different breeds in a minimum of 15 different styles and create grooming diaries for all.
By completing these different breeds, you will gain an understanding of the different aspects of grooming. Any breed or cross breed can be used as long as you show a good variety of techniques and skills.
Sessions will be both theory and practical based and you will be required to complete a written portfolio to accompany your practical work.
Unlike other courses you are not required to complete a Level 2 course before starting on the Level 3. It is aimed at the beginner wanting to learn commercial skills to enable them to begin a career in dog grooming or for the capable groomer wanting a recognised qualification to accompany their skills.
Units included within this qualification are:
- Assess, plan and record dog grooming work
- Canine first aid
- Carry out styling and finishing of a dog
- Health checking a dog by a dog groomer
- Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
- Welcome, receive and care for customers
By completing the Level 3 Diploma you will demonstrate to customers and employers that you are competent and able to groom a variety of dogs.
Due to the high demand and limited number of places on this programme, there is an application process to consider the following for applicants:
- Prior Canine experience
- Previous grooming experience / qualifications
- Reason for undertaking the programme
At the consent of applicants, we can keep applications on file in the event of an available space on a future programme for anyone not initially accepted.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
The course provides practical and theory sessions and you will be assessed using a variety of these methods. You will be required to complete an extensive portfolio in conjunction with the course.
There are 7 written assignments, 3 practical assessments and students will be expected to complete a grooming diary for each dog they groom, this is something that is to be completed in your own time.
