Intermediate Improve your Riding

Duration: Eight weeks

Start dates:

  • Thursday 23rd April 2020

Time: 6 – 8pm

Cost: £150 (or £30 per lesson)

Course Summary: This course is ideal for those who seek to improve and develop their riding technique. You will work on balance and riding in harmony with a horse in all paces.

Entry requirements: Participants must be at least 14 years of age. You should be able to walk, trot and canter confidently and independently of the rein at approximately BHS Stage 2 level equivalent. You should also be able to ride comfortably without stirrups in walk, trot and canter.

Participants will be required to book a ½ hour assessment lesson with the course instructor prior to course commencement which will be arranged following payment on the Reaseheath online shop.

In order to ensure the welfare of our horses, we operate a personal weight restriction of no more than 13 stone. All riders will be weighed and height measured prior to the start of the course. Please click here ( for further information on our equestrian centre weight limit for riding.

Course Content: You will learn how to correctly exercise a horse in walk, trot and canter, assessing and improving its way of going and its way of going around the arena.  You will also jump small fences and work over grid. There is a focus on developing your riding position and balance.

We have a great range of horses at the College. However, as their welfare is paramount, you will only be mounted on horses which suit your height and weight.

This may narrow down the selection of horses we can offer you.

Clothing and Equipment required:

You will need to supply a riding hat that has been correctly fitted and meets the current safety standards:

  • PAS015(1998 or 2011) + a BSI Kitemark OR Inspec IC Mark
  • VG1 01.040 (2014-12) + a BSI Kitemark OR Inspec IC Mark
  • ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) + SEI mark
  • SNELL (E2001 or E2016) + SNELL label and number
  • AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards) + SAI global mark

For safety reasons we ask that you wear gloves and no jewellery, apart from a watch and wedding ring, is worn.  Hair of shoulder length or longer must be tied back and a hairnet worn.

Please don’t go out and buy any special clothing, we want you to feel comfortable and relaxed during your lessons. As long as it is safe, dark in colour, practical and suitable attire for the given weather conditions then it will be ok. We would advise you to bring extra clothing, such as waterproofs, warm jackets or a cooler top with sleeves if the weather looks as though it could be unpredictable. Please note hoodies are not permitted.

Either breeches or jodhpurs are fine – plain colours are usually more practical and long leather riding boots or boots with leather gaiters must be worn. Participants should also bring a long and short whip.

Finally, body protectors are strongly recommended by Reaseheath Equestrian Centre in all aspects of ridden activity, however these are compulsory for any jumping lessons. Please note, your body protector should comply with the following specifications:

  • A BETA level 3 (purple label) displaying either a 2009 label or later
