Graduation of University Centre Reaseheath’s ‘Class of 2023’

Nearly 200 graduates who completed degrees at University Centre Reaseheath this summer joined peers from the University of Chester, our strategic alliance partner, for a spectacular graduation ceremony held in Chester’s historic cathedral last Friday.

The graduates were awarded degrees in agricultural science, animal management, canine clinical behaviour, equine science, zoo management, wildlife conservation and ecology, adventure sports and coaching, rural events management, dairy technology and food science. They were joined for the first time by our inaugural cohort of veterinary nurses, who were awarded their BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing after completing a new four year degree which is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

While many of our graduates study full time for their degree, others choose a part-time route while continuing to work or are degree level apprentices on study release from their workplace.

Welcoming our Class of 2023, Professor Eunice Simmons, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Chester, told our graduates that their degrees would benefit the wider community and that they were now equipped with the skills and knowledge to develop the industries around regenerative farming, conservation of animal species, food security and sustainability,  veterinary nursing and rural businesses.

They would be following in the footsteps of high achieving alumni from UCR, some of whom had gone into further research while others had become lecturers, physiotherapists, nutritionists, zookeepers, dairy herd managers, wildlife ecologists or were running their own successful business enterprises.

Her parting advice was that they should remain responsive to change and be prepared to use their newly acquired skills and critical thinking to the full.

Our graduates were presented individually to the Presiding Officer by UCR’s Dean of Higher Education Peter Greenall. They included the three recipients of this year’s Dean’s Awards:

Kalliopi Angelakopoulos, BSc (Hons) Zoo Management, who received the Meredydd David Award for Academic and Technical Excellence

Tomos Jelfs, BSc (Hons) Animal Management (Behaviour and Welfare) who was selected for the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Research

Susie Noble, BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing, who was this year’s recipient of the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement and Personal Progression
