More Information about the recruitment process at Reaseheath
How does the recruitment and selection process work?
Shortlisting
Shortlisting is carried out by the recruiting manager, based on an assessment of the information you have provided in your application form against the essential criteria listed on the person specification for the role. Only those candidates who fully meet the essential criteria will be invited to the next stage. Should we receive a high volume of applications for a role, we will use the desirable criteria in addition to the essential criteria for shortlisting.
Reaseheath College has been assessed in relation to its commitment and practice in the employment of disabled people. As a result we can display the two ticks logo on our recruitment page and we guarantee that any disabled applicant who meets the essential criteria for the role will be invited for interview.
Those candidates who are shortlisted will be invited to an assessment centre.
Assessment Centre
The assessment centre is designed to give candidates an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and competencies which they have in relation to the role. You will be told beforehand if you are required to prepare anything.
We use a range of assessments within assessment centres; each has been selected to enable candidates to demonstrate the competencies that are necessary for successful performance in the role. They may involve:
- Delivering a micro-teach to the interview panel
- Delivering a presentation to the interview panel
- Group discussion exercise
- Psychometric testing
- In-tray exercise
- Role play scenarios
- Formal Interview
Following the assessment centre you will be informed of the outcome.
Offers of appointment are conditional upon receipt of a satisfactory enhanced DBS check (disclosure and barring service), two satisfactory references (one must be from current or last employer), a fit to work declaration, sight of qualification certificates and Right to Work in the UK check.
What is safer recruitment?
Reaseheath College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Safeguarding children is everyone’s responsibility and good safeguarding practice has to be built into routine procedures and practice. Nowhere is this more important than in the recruitment and vetting of people who have contact with children.
It is vital that organisations which appoint people (including volunteers) to work with children adopt robust recruitment and vetting procedures that minimise the risk of employing people who might abuse children, or are otherwise unsuited to work with them. This includes all local authorities, and educational establishments, as well as agencies that supply staff to the education sector and those that contract with the education sector to provide services.
The College as part of its safer recruitment and selection process, undertakes a DBS check on all staff who will be working with children. In addition, the College requests:
- A minimum of two written and verified professional references (where appropriate one of the references should be from the most recent employer where the person worked with, or was in contact with children)
- Any previous academic and employment gaps are checked and verified (checking the reasons provided for any identifiable gaps)
- Evidence of relevant qualifications and current memberships of professional bodies (sight of original certificates)
- Evidence of Right to Work within the United Kingdom through checking the authenticity of pre-employment documentation i.e. passport
- Prohibition from teaching check
- Online search – as part of the recruitment process the College will carry out an online search as part of its due diligence. This may help identify any incidents or issues that have happened, and are publicly available online, which the College might want to explore with you either at interview or before a final offer of employment is given.
All offers of employment are subject to the above pre-employment checks.
The College also provides training and updates for all staff in Safeguarding and Prevent (the duty to protect children from the risk of radicalisation).
Policy Statement on the Recruitment of Ex-offenders
It is a requirement of the DBS’s Code of Practice that all Registered Bodies must treat DBS applicants who have a criminal record fairly and do not discriminate because of a conviction or other information revealed. It also obliges Registered Bodies to have a written policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders; a copy of which can be given to DBS applicants at the outset of the recruitment process.
Download the policy statement on the recruitment of ex-offenders.
Data Protection
The information you provide on the application form will be used during the recruitment process. At no time will any information you supply be given to any other party unless your expressed permission is obtained. The information supplied will form the basis of the successful candidate’s confidential Personnel Records and may be stored electronically and manually. All information supplied by unsuccessful candidates will be securely destroyed after six months.
Recruitment equality and diversity
Equality and Diversity
The College is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. Reaseheath College as an Employer and as a Provider of Education and Training proactively works towards eliminating unlawful discrimination, harassment or victimisation on the grounds of each of the nine ‘protected characteristics’ outlined in the Equality Act 2010 and will continue to work towards eliminating discrimination on the grounds of a perceived or associative protective characteristic thereby promoting an environment where all individuals feel valued, safe, included and respected. The College staff recruitment and selection process, policies and practices are designed to ensure when employment decisions are made that they are based solely on the skills and qualities required for the position and comply with all relevant legislative and best practice standards. Please complete the relevant parts of the Application Form to assist the College in its on-going assessment of the progress of its Equality and Diversity duty. The information you provide at application will be held in an anonymous format by Human Resources and used for statistical monitoring purposes only in accordance with statutory provisions.
Disability Confident Employer
Reaseheath College is a Disability Confident employer and is committed to employing and retaining both disabled people and those with health conditions. To help us to be a disability confident employer it is important that we know when individuals have a disability or health issue, which is why we ask for this information on our application form. The Recruiting Manager will be notified when candidates have indicated that they have a disability so that they are aware when it comes to interview. If a candidate ticks to indicate that they need any additional assistance or adjustments to attend the interview/assessment the Recruiting Manager will contact them prior to the day to discuss.
Use of the Internet and Social Media in the Recruitment Process
Unless it is in relation to finding candidates (for example, if an individual has put his/her details on social media websites for the purpose of attracting prospective employers), the HR team and managers will not, either themselves or through a third party, conduct searches on applicants on social media. This is because conducting these searches during the selection process might lead to a presumption that an applicant’s protected characteristics (for example, sexual orientation or religious beliefs) played a part in a recruitment decision.
Transgender Applicants
The Disclosure and Barring Service has a confidential checking process for Transgender Applicants who do not wish to reveal details of their previous identity to the person who asked them to complete an application form for a DBS check. Further information from the DBS is available by telephoning: 0151 676 1452 or by sending an e-mail to the DBS Sensitive Applications Team via sensitive@dbs.gsi.gov.uk.
For further information on DBS checks please visit www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service.
