Construction short courses

The following courses are held in our dedicated construction workshops and run during term time. All materials are included in the cost of the course. Places are limited and booking will be on a first come, first served basis.

Government covid-19 guidelines regarding social distancing and face coverings will be followed. Each participant will have the use of their set of tools provided by the department for the whole weekend.

Weekend Introduction to Plastering

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • 17th and 18th April 2021
  • 8th and 9th May 2021
  • 12th and 13th June 2021
  • 3rd and 4th July 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the basic principles of plastering. At the end of the course, delegates should be competent in plaster boarding and skim finishing.

Petrol Cut off Saw Training and Certification

Dates:

  • 8th May 2021
  • 12th June 2021

Time: 9am – 4pm

Overview: The course will consist of a maximum of 6 delegates unless pre-agreement is gained from NOCN. The basic course will be delivered over a half day period and the additional modules will extend the total duration to a whole day. The training is a blend of theoretical and practical hands-on study. The theoretical elements are supplemented by the course video.

Delegates knowledge is assessed at the beginning of the course through an initial assessment paper and is formally tested at the end of the basic course through a practical observation and a multiple choice examination paper. The course is pass/fail. A qualification is gained by passing this course that appears on the back of your CSCS card.

Weekend Introduction to Carpentry and Joinery Household Tasks

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in skirting, shelving, architraving, hanging a door, fitting a mortice lock and hunger and similar tasks around the house.

Evening Parent and Child Activity Experience

Cost: £50

Dates:

  • 13th May 2021
  • 24th June 2021

Time: 5 – 8.30pm

Overview: This evening activity experience is a for a parent/guardian to come along with their child and spend the day together learning new skills. This interactive experience is a great way to create precious memories with your child.

Weekend Introduction to Brickwork

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • 15th and 16th May 2021
  • 19th and 20th June 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop will cover brickwork for the garden including brick walls, planters, bases etc. however the content will be flexible. If there is something specific you would like to build (within reason) then please let us know before the start of the course.

Weekend Introduction to Basic Woodworking Joints

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • 15th and 16th May 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning how to produce the common woodworking joints found in tables, chairs, doors and windows. These will include mortice and tenon, bridle joints and halving dovetails.

Weekend Introduction to Wall Tiling

Dates:

  • 22nd and 23rd May 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the basic principles of wall tiling. The course will include setting out and laying a course of tiles, including adding a feature pattern. By the end of the course delegates should be competent in tiling a wall.

Weekend Introduction to Working Safely with Power Tools

Cost: £160

  • 3rd and 4th July 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the safe use and handling of power tools used in the Woodworking Industry. You will build a gable toolbox from 18mm plywood which you will be able to take home.
