Construction short courses

The following courses are held in our dedicated construction workshops and run during term time. All materials are included in the cost of the course. Places are limited and booking will be on a first come, first served basis.

Government covid-19 guidelines regarding social distancing and face coverings will be followed. Each participant will have the use of their set of tools provided by the department for the whole weekend.

Weekend Introduction to Bricklaying

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • 6th and 7th March 2021

Time: 9am – 4pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop will cover brickwork for the garden including brick walls, planters, bases etc. however the content will be flexible. If there is something specific you would like to build (within reason) then please let us know before the start of the course.

Weekend Introduction to Carpentry and Joinery Household Tasks

Cost: £160

  • 6th and 7th March 2021
  • 8th and 9th May 2021

Time: 9am – 4pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in skirting, shelving, architraving, hanging a door, fitting a mortice lock and hunger and similar tasks around the house.

One Day Parent and Child Bench Workshop

Cost: £50

Dates:

  • 13th May 2021
  • 24th June 2021

Time: 5 – 8.30pm

Overview: This evening activity experience is a for a parent/guardian to come along with their child and spend the day together learning new skills. This interactive experience is a great way to create precious memories with your child.

One Day Cut Off Saw Training

Weekend Introduction to Plastering

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • 6th and 7th March 2021
  • 13th and 14th March 2021
  • 8th and 9th May 2021
  • 3rd and 4th July 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the basic principles of plastering. At the end of the course, delegates should be competent in plaster boarding and skim finishing.

Weekend Introduction to Wall Tiling

Dates:

  • 20th and 21st March 2021
  • 22nd and 23rd May 2021

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the basic principles of wall tiling. The course will include setting out and laying a course of tiles, including adding a feature pattern. By the end of the course delegates should be competent in tiling a wall.

Weekend Introduction to Woodworking Power Tools

Cost: £160

  • 13th and 14th March 2021
  • 3rd and 4th July 2021

Time: 9am – 4pm

This introductory two day workshop is for anyone interested in learning the safe use and handling of power tools used in the woodworking industry. You will build a gable toolbox from 18mm plywood which you will be able to take home.

Weekend Introduction to Working Safely with Power Tools

Cost: £160

  • 13th and 14th March 2021
  • 3rd and 4th July 2021

Time: 9am – 4pm

Overview: This introductory 2 day workshop is for anyone interested in learning how to safely use Power Tools including safely changing tooling. This course will cover Planers, Routers, Chop Saws, Jig Saws, Ban Saws etc.

Weekend Advanced Brickwork

Cost: £160

Dates:

  • TBC

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This Advanced two day workshop is a follow on from the introductory courses. Delegates will be able to choose from the following tasks to undertake over the weekend: a pillar, a semi-circular or segmental arch, a 9” corner wall, or a cavity wall incorporating block work.

Weekend Introduction to Basic Woodworking Joints

Cost: £160

Dates:

Time: 10am – 3pm

Overview: This introductory 2 day workshop is for anyone interested in learning how to produce the common woodworking joints found in tables, chairs, doors and windows. These will include mortice and tenon, bridle joints and halving dovetails.
