Why study a Food Science T Level at Reaseheath College?

Are you fascinated by food and want to find out more about the science behind it? If so, a T Level in Food Science at Reaseheath College could be the perfect choice for you.

In this blog post, Reaseheath’s Food Science Lecturer Funmi Adegbaju explains her experience in the industry, the benefits of completing a T Level, what you will learn throughout the course, and how it will help you to become ready for an exciting career.

Food Science Lecturer Funmi’s experience

I have always been interested in food and science, and I find gaining practical, hands-on experience in the lab really exciting. It is a great industry to work in because people will always need food and health care, so there are plenty of employment opportunities.

I completed a BSc in Integrated Science, a Masters degree in Botany, and then a Doctorate degree specialising in medicinal and food plants. After this, I went on to complete a post-doctorate fellowship to carry out food science research, analysing food, its nutritional composition, what we get from eating food and more. I am passionate about passing on my knowledge and experience to students who are keen to learn more about the industry and I love helping them gain the skills they need to forge their own careers in this dynamic sector.

What will I learn on the Food Science T Level?

Over the two-year programme, you will study a variety of topics including physics, chemistry and biology, science methodology, science concepts, data handling, ethics, health and safety, nutrition, the study of nature, properties and composition of foods, and much more. You will also complete an employer set project and benefit from a 315-hour industry placement for that all important work experience. You will also have the opportunity to gain additional approved qualifications, in areas such as food safety and risk assessment, to make you and your CV stand out even further.

How will the Food Science T Level prepare me for employment?

The Food Science T Level has been devised by STEM professionals and employers with your future career in mind. It gives you the skills you need to go straight into full-time employment, into roles such as a science technologist or lab technologist, but it will also give you the necessary UCAS points needed to go to university or onto a higher level apprenticeship if you would prefer.

A huge benefit of completing the Food Science T Level is the 315-hour industry placement, which is a great chance to gain hands-on experience in the workplace. This is a flexible work placement which you can complete when best suits you and the employer you will be working for.

The Food Science T Level also prepares you for employment as you will complete an employer set project, which may for example require you to develop a new food product and present your findings. This helps you to develop a range of skills needed in the workplace, including researching, writing, giving presentations, working with others, communication and problem-solving, and much more.
