Public Services students at Reaseheath College and University Centre were given a rare insight into the high-pressure world of tactical policing during a guest visit from the Cheshire Police’s Firearms Unit.
The session, attended by Level 1, 2, and 3 learners, bridged the gap between classroom theory and front-line reality.
Two serving firearms officers from the unit visited the campus to provide an overview of their roles, detailing the various recruitment routes and the rigorous professional standards required to join the specialist team.
Much of the demonstration focused on the technical aspects of the job and students were given an up-close look at the range of equipment carried by officers, as well as the tactical setups integrated into their rapid-response vehicles.
However, the visiting officers emphasised that the role demands more than just technical proficiency. They spoke about the critical importance of advanced interpersonal and communication skills, explaining how de-escalation techniques are used as a primary tool to resolve volatile situations safely before the use of force is considered.
The visit had a strong effect on the group, with several students who had previously been considering general policing careers now deciding to specialise their path towards becoming Authorised Firearms Officers.
Lecturer Mark Jones said: “There was an immediate impact on the students, and this is exactly why we bring industry experts onto campus to show the diverse career paths available. It bridges that gap between theory and the real world. Our students walked away not just inspired, but with a real understanding of the grit and communication skills needed to succeed. Seeing them shift their career goals towards the firearms unit after just one session shows just how influential these experiences can be.”
