An international delegation from Japan has visited Reaseheath College and University Centre as part of a UK-wide programme focused on strengthening trade links and assessing the quality and consistency of British red meat production.
The visit, organised by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) forms part of a wider industry fact-finding mission across UK farms, processors and retail sites, designed to give overseas buyers first-hand insight into the systems underpinning UK beef, and the standards that support its global reputation.
With premium export markets like Japan placing increasing emphasis on traceability, quality and technical assurance, the ability to demonstrate those standards in practice is a key part of maintaining and growing trade relationships.
Delegates were welcomed into Reaseheath Food Centre’s food processing halls for a specialist butchery demonstration led by industry experts.
The session provided a detailed demonstration of UK carcase breakdown, product utilisation and technical butchery skill, highlighting the precision and consistency required to meet both domestic expectations and international export standards.
Rather than operating purely as an educational demonstration, the session formed part of a broader industry-facing programme showcasing the strength of UK skills development and its role in maintaining global competitiveness in the red meat sector.
Gary Evans, Master Butcher at Reaseheath, said the demonstration reflects the importance of visible, practical skills in supporting the reputation of British beef overseas.
“When international delegates see the level of skill, consistency and care involved in British butchery, it reinforces exactly why UK beef continues to be held in such high regard globally. This isn’t just about technique, it’s about trust in the whole supply chain, from farm to fork. Being able to demonstrate that standard in real time is hugely important for export confidence, and it’s a real credit to the industry and to the skills being developed here.”
Martin Eccles, Trade Butchery Manager at AHDB, said the visit forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with key export markets and showcase the strengths of UK agriculture.
He added: “This programme is about giving international trade partners direct exposure to UK production systems and the standards that sit behind our red meat sector. Japan is an important market for premium British beef, and visits like this help reinforce the quality, traceability and professionalism that underpin continued trade relationships.”
The visit highlighted growing international scrutiny and interest in UK food production standards, where technical skill, traceability and supply chain assurance are increasingly central to maintaining access to premium export markets.
It also underlines the role of specialist institutions such as Reaseheath in supporting the wider UK food and farming sector, not only through training the next generation of skilled professionals, but by actively contributing to the visibility and credibility of UK agricultural expertise on the global stage.
