Students build essential safety skills at farm and forestry health and safety day

Students at Reaseheath College and University Centre took part in a dynamic, industry-led Health and Safety Day last week, designed to strengthen the professional skills and confidence they’ll rely on throughout their careers.

The event, hosted at the Nantwich-based college’s farm, connected learners with leading organisations including the National Farmers’ Union, SP Energy Networks, Rockfall, LLM Farm Vets, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Farm Machinery. Each delivered practical workshops and Q&A sessions, focused on the behaviours, standards and decision-making that employers value across modern land-based industries.

Students studying Level 2, Diplomas and T Levels in Countryside (Land and Wildlife), Forestry and Arboriculture, and Agriculture rotated through a series of interactive stations covering machinery awareness, PPE, equipment checks, safe handling techniques, situational thinking and working effectively in outdoor environments. The sessions emphasised real-world expectations and helped learners understand how strong safety habits support productivity, teamwork and employability.

Louise Guy, Course Manager for Agriculture and organiser of the event, said: “Events like this really help our students see how their skills translate into the workplace. Hearing directly from employers gives them a clearer picture of what professionalism looks like on farms, estates and in forestry roles. It’s all about preparing them to step confidently into the next stage of their journey.”

She added that the event continues to grow each year and plays an important part in helping students build the practical understanding, judgement and attitude that employers look for.

By engaging with specialists and exploring real equipment and scenarios, learners left with a stronger sense of their future role in the sector and how to approach it safely, responsibly and professionally.

Reaseheath will continue to build on the success of the Health and Safety Day as part of its wider commitment to developing work-ready, industry-aware talent for the land-based workforce.
