Pathway to Agriculture

If you’re interested in finding out about agriculture this is the course for you.

You’ll be introduced to the land based industry and enjoy working with our farm animals and learning about crop production.

You’ll also have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as well as develop your personal and social skills, helping you to progress on to further study or work.

What will I study?

  • City and Guilds Certificate in Land-Based Studies (Level 1)
  • You will complete 60 hours work experience
  • Career Ready
  • English and Maths (Functional Skills/GCSE) based on prior attainment and initial assessment

Programme intent

Programme is designed for students who aspire to work in the agriculture industry. Students develop the knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours needed to progress academically or into employment within the sector.

This programme is underpinned by the four pillars of Preparation for Adulthood (PfA):

  • Employment: Building sector-specific skills, understanding workplace expectations, and preparing for careers in agriculture.
  • Independent Living: Developing responsibility, safe working practices, and practical life skills relevant to both personal and professional contexts.
  • Community Participation: Engaging with peers, staff, and local agricultural enterprises to contribute positively to projects and activities.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Promoting awareness of personal safety, livestock welfare, and healthy routines.

This programme provides students with a solid foundation for progression, whether into further study at Level 2, vocational training, or entry-level roles in the agriculture industry, while fostering personal growth, confidence, and practical competence.

What modules will I study?

  • Safe and effective Working Practices in the Land-Based Industries
  • Assist with the care of animals
  • Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
  • Introduction to production livestock and breeds

How long will it take?

  • Your study programme will be for the full academic year and your days of study will be for 3 full days per week
  • 1 year full-time

What qualifications do I need to start?

  • No requirement for entry qualifications but should be working at Entry 3 maths and English as a minimum
  • Relevant practical experience desirable but not essential
  • You will have at least one interview and an assessment of your literacy and numeracy and support needs before you are offered a place
