Apprenticeships in
Horticulture
Available for those aged 16 or over, this is your opportunity to earn as you learn. You’ll blend working for a landscape gardener/contractor or a similar job with one day a week at Reaseheath.
You’ll have the opportunity to study industry appropriate modules relevant to your place of work. These could include amenity and decorative horticulture, maintaining landscaped areas or the safe use of horticulture machinery.
What will I study?
- Principles of plant growth and development
- Plant nutrition requirements
- Ways to reduce waste
- How to use equipment correctly
- Cultivating soils for differing purposes
- Controlling plant pests and diseases
- Identifying plants
- Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications
- You will have the opportunity to work towards additional qualifications
How long will it take?
- 18 to 24 months depending on previous experience (1 day per week, every other week)
What qualifications do I need to start?
- Preferably GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and Maths
What qualifications will I gain?
- Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture Operative
- Additional training is provided in a number of disciplines
- Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications
- First aid certificate
- L2 Award in safe use of pesticides
- (PA1) PA2 (Boom Sprayer) OR PA6 (Hand Held Applicators)

Duration of the course is 24 months – Day release (every other week). Career options – land scape gardener, Horticulture Techincan, grounds maintance worker.
